Austin Seven - Schedule of Charges for Repairs

The Austin Motor Co. Ltd. had fixed charges for the work carried out at their Repair Depots and Austin Agents, with the cost of parts and materials charged extra.

Considering some of the charges compared with today's possible costs based upon the real price index from 1930 to 2105 [1] then £2-0-0 would be £112.90; 5/- (25p) would be £14.12 and 1/6 (7½p) would be £4.24.  Bear in mind that many working men in the UK were paid £3 to £5 for a 50 hour week in the late 1920s early 1930s.  Typical annual wages were 1930 £195.80; 1935 £192.40 and by 1940 £270.79 [2], compared with c £26,500 in 2014.  In 1935 petrol was 1/6 (7½p) per gallon, or 1.65p per litre, bearing 8d (3.33p) 44.5% tax.[3].
