The Kernow Rumble
our 10th Anniversary Rally July 2010.

We celebrated our 10th Anniversary with our first ever weekend rally at Wendron Sports Club, near Helston on 9/10/11 July 2010.  Friends from the Scottish, Bristol, Dorset, Devon and South Wales Austin Seven Clubs were invited, and with our own members we had 72 entries, some of whom could not make it on the day.  This probably made the event the biggest ever gathering of Austin Sevens in Cornwall.

So why 'The Kernow Rumble'?  Well, 'Kernow' is 'Cornwall' in the Cornish Language and our 'Sevens' do tend to rattle along.  But then we considered 'Rattle' to be a little harsh to describe our lovable cars so 'Rumble' is was to be.

Welcome by our Chair,
Mary Hardman in the 'Rumble Programme:

"A very warm welcome to 'The Kernow Rumble', celebrating the first 10 years of the Cornwall Austin Seven Club.

I wonder how many of the founder members at the inaugural meeting back in August 2000 ever thought that the Club would grow to what it is today?  I can’t answer that question personally, having missed its earliest years, but the Club has thrived over the decade and continues to grow and we now have over 140 members.

We are pleased to be able to celebrate our first ever open gathering with friends from other Austin Seven Clubs as well as our own members.  To the visiting clubs; thank you for coming, and while you are here, please make the most of our wonderful county, its villages, lanes and byways in one of the best little cars ever built."

The venue was the Wendron Sports Club, cricket and football combined, which offered sufficient space for a large group of campers etc, with 24/7 facilities; a bar and a room for the evening entertainment.  This enabled us to invite our visitors from up-country to stay on site for a week and offer them the opportunity to have free days to visit all parts of the area and see the wonderful coastal and inland scenery that the west of Cornwall offers.

After months of planning the event was underway so come the day it was time to set up the site, ready for the first arrivals who would be staying for the week.  Signs at the gate and setting up the reception tent were the first tasks.

The first arrivals were soon on site.

Of course, some folk have been everywhere, and there were more stickers on the back!

Everyone was soon chatting to friends whom they had not seen since the last Club Rally a few weeks before, and were introduced to folk they had not met before.

Every entrant was given a 'goody bag' with a memento mug, Cornish Biscuits, an identity lanyard and a few other bits as well as the essential event paperwork.

Then it was down to positioning Motorhomes, erecting tents, and settling in; some seeking the ultimate camping comfort, an airbed.

This was going to be a happy event.  Meanwhile the Event Secretary had everything sorted out.

The Wendron Cricket Club offered a good value breakfast and the bar for evening relaxation.

As the main part of the 'Rumble' was not until the weekend those staying on site for the week were out and about sightseeing along the north-coast to St Ives; the Roseland and Lizard Peninsulars; and other areas, on the Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

Work on site for the organisers seemed to expand to fill the time available.  The Event Secretary was anxious that we had a group photograph of all the 'Sevens' present on the Sunday morning.  Trials with a platform ladder did not work and so a tower was brought on to site.

Friday evening was the opportunity for our own music and entertainment as more folk had arrived to stay for the weekend.

The Bristol Club supplied the song books; the familiar old words soon rang out.

Our music arrangers had earlier composed "There's a hole in my tank, me 'andsum, me 'andsum." to a well known tune but few of the impromptu choir hit the right notes at the right time!

The suggested circular routes for the Rumble Run on the Saturday took the 'Sevens' westwards along the north and south coast roads to meet at the Cape Cornwall Golf Club for lunch.  Locals, and visitors, in many coastal villages were surprised to see the many 'Sevens' passing by.

With plenty of time allowed for the run everyone had the opportunity to visit places that they had heard about but, perhaps, never visited, so Porthleven and Marazion, Mousehole, Botallack, Levant Mine and Zennor were some of the villages which saw our 'Sevens' passing through.

The pasty lunch at Cape Cornwall Golf Club was enjoyed by everyone.

Some folk then took the opportunity to visit the Coastwatch Lookout high on the Cape where a Cornwall Club member, one of the local volunteers, was on watch to describe the work involved.

Then it was back to the site by the rest of the circular route looking at places of interest as they wished along the way.  Everyone had had a chance to see some of best coastal and inland scenery in west Cornwall.

There was a little time to relax and chat over food whilst enjoying the better evening weather; and then it was off to the live music.
