The
Annual Rally at Polwhele, 2nd September 2007.
(By Thora Angell)

This annual fun day was well supported with a
good array of Austins, with members having great enjoyment tackling
the different games.
Having the car event in front of Polwhele House on the gravelled
area is a good idea, a lot of work for the helpers, but what a
good spectators view point and I felt we were not separated at
all.
I always look forward to Dorothy's feely bags, but she foxed many
of us.
The committee members photo competition stirred up an interest.
The BBQ facility was available for some nice juicy meals, while
others enjoyed tucking into their picnic hampers. This is one
time when members can catch up with friendly chatter, whilst sitting
in the beautiful surrounds of Polwhele .
The results of Wendy's Raffle and prize giving were undertaken
at the latter part of the day, more facts will be in our next
Focus.
The Gazebo and cream teas were a treat for all of us, to finish
the day off. Thanks to our ladies.
Trevor and your band of helpers, this is for you - We do appreciate
your enthusiasm and hard work and hours it takes into planning
this event, I know you enjoy it, gosh and so do we!
Thank you to Polwhele School.

The"
Far East" perspective. (By Mike Davies)
This year those of us from the East
decided to adopt the same tried and tested formula of past years,
where we would meet up at Polson BP garage just off the A30, then
make our way down to the event together. David Thompson, Bill
and Eileen Watson and I set off on a dry September Sunday. The
group was small by comparison to previous years as a number of
members were unable to make it due to family commitments and holidays.
My very good friends Ken and Heidi from London were down staying
at the building site I call home at present, and I invited them
down to the event. Way back in the late 70's, Ken helped me rebuild
my Ruby and so is very familiar with A7s; he has been dragged
out to a few events in his time.
We arrived at the event with the weather improving
all the time. This was great considering the way the weather had
been, with some of our local car events having been cancelled
due to wet stuff. It was good to see that Graham and Sally had
also made it down from our end of the county in their 4 seat tourer.
It was also great to see Steve and Anna Martin, who had brought
young Harry out for the day but he seem to sleep through most
of it!

.
The event was laid out slightly different this
year with us parking the cars on the grass and the driving tests
taking place on what has previously been the car park. I have
to say this was much better, as you could see the cars taking
part and the organizers running the driving tests were not away
from the main gathering. Thanks to Tamsin for entertaining my
friends whilst I was assisting with the driving tests
A marquee was serving tea/coffee and the barbecue
worked well. This year Brian and Dorothy had organized some difficult
'feely bags for the guys and girls' (more on this later). Wendy
again was selling raffle tickets for a local charity, this year
being Children's Hospice South West. There was also a competition
to put names to photographs of some of our members in their younger
days; I wish Kathryn had been there as I had not a clue on any
of them (I'm hopeless at that).
The organizers had again worked very hard to cover all possibilities
as there was plenty of shelter if it was needed; I am glad to
say that it was not.

The prize giving and raffle was at the end of
the day but unfortunately in my normal way and unknown to the
organizers I had filled in the wrong form which meant that Ken
and Heidi (well Ken) won the 'guy' feely bag competition. This
caused some joviality considering Ken does not have an Austin
(yet) but I had to come clean and admit the error, and I think
I have been let off. Finally the day was rounded off with a cream
tea, which set us all in a good mind for the uneventful journey
home, and we arrived home just before any wet stuff.
It was a really nice relaxed event this year,
which was great and as usual it gave time for us all to chat and
catch up on what the others had been up to this year.

Once again the organization for
this event was well done and it was not over 'organized'. It had
a good relaxed atmosphere and thank you does not really sum up
the hard work that was involved in making this happen. The weather
helped to turn this into a brilliant day out.
Thanks to all the organizers and
participants.
